On The Issues

  • Already an acknowledged expert in the health-care field, Fern will bring her experience to Harrisburg to work to solve the ongoing health-care crisis in Pennsylvania. But as important an issue as health care is, it is far from the only area in which Dr. Kaufman expects to have an impact.
  • Property taxes and easing the burden on the homeowner to finance a good educational system with high property taxes. By working with the legislature and the Governor, steps should be taken to ease this financial burden, especially in this time of economic crisis where people need more money at home to take care of their families. This has to be done in a bi-partisan fashion. The only way we can make lasting change is when we all work together and get away from party lines.
  • Keeping our environment safe and investing in renewable energy sources is crucial to Pennsylvania. Options to reduce our dependence on natural resources will create jobs and offer economic stability for what had become a problem of epidemic proportions. Not only do we need to develop alternative energy sources, we need to educate our citizens on how to make these options accessible and affordable.
  • Unchecked crime is some of the areas of the district. By working with local law enforcement and listening to the needs of the neighborhood leaders, steps should be taken to provide a safe, drug-free environment for all. Families and neighborhoods are being held hostage by the crime and economic environment we are in. Our youth need choices where the lure of the fancy car doesn't measure up to the lure of a good education and activities such as organized sports and community service.
  • Preserving open space in the district with commercial expansion only in a mutually agreed upon and mutually beneficial fashion that will serve to offer necessary goods and services while increasing property values and limiting unnecessary and business focused building. The strain of building and expansion has placed an undue burden on or critical services and tax base. Firefighters, local law enforcement and basic services such as water and sewage are stretched to their limits with unchecked expansion.
  • Discrimination in any form has no place in our society. Citizens of Pennsylvania need to know that they are protected from unfair practices and that the government and the legislature provide a fair, secure environment for all. Fern pledges to fervently support legislation that speaks to the core of this issue.
  • The building industry in the state is unfair in that apparent alliances with local government work to the benefit of the builder leaving the homeowner with the price tag. It is time for the state to take care of the people and not corporate greed. Preserving open space and spending the tax base wisely is more important than industry getting rich at the expense of the American dream, especially in an economic and housing crisis of historic proportions.
  • Pennsylvania has become a focal point for animal cruelty in terms of the percentage of puppy mills operating in the state. While sound, safe and humane breeding of animals is acceptable, inhumane treatment of animals is not only cruel but is a reflection on all of the citizens of a Pennsylvania. While the legislature has taken important steps in transforming this practice, there is still much work to be done to look after all of God's creatures.
